The William Hill Sports Book of the Year

What is the William Hill Sports Book of the Year?
The William Hill Sports Book of the Year is literally (no pun intended) where book awards and betting meet – a fusion of sports books and sportsbooks, you could say.

The British bookie has awarded the prize since 1989 and has yet to fail in providing the thinking punter’s bedtime reading.

What are the books about?
Football dominates the subject matter (and online betting in general) but the William Hill Sports Book of the Year has covered a wide range of subjects. Winning entries have dealt with rugby, boxing, golf, the Oxford-Cambridge boat race and cricket.

Impressively, at a time when many senior figures duck the issue when sport and politics meet, the William Hill judging panel don’t. Winning books are frequently those that breach the gap between sports writing and more serious reportage.

What does the winner get?
The winner gets £18,000 cash, a £2,000 free bet with Hills and a specially commissioned, hand-bound copy of their book.

When is the Sports Book of the Year announced?
In keeping with the rich tradition of literary prizegiving, the winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year will be announced just as you’re wondering what to buy people for Christmas.
