The Orange Prize for Fiction
The Orange Prize is seen as a pretty prestigious book award, but doesn’t carry the kudos of the Booker or Costa prizes. However, it has generated a lot of column inches since its start in 1996 thanks to its women-only entry restriction.
Some decry it as political correctness gone mad, while others (notably A S Byatt, who has told her publishers never to submit her for the award) are outraged by the idea that women should need a book award of their own.
Still, the winner gets £30,000, a statue known as a “Bessie”, and an inevitable jump up the bestseller lists.
