The Dante Stakes is the highlight of York’s spring meeting – and our forecast tip could leave you quids in if you back Frankie Dettori and our betting tip for second.

Chabal is yet another Galileo colt who can take the Dante Stakes on his way to running in the Derby – although odds of 9/4 won’t excite people who like betting tips with bigger odds.

My tip for today is a straight forecast bet, with the Godolphin horse coming first and Michael Bell’s Coordinated Cut in second.

Best odds of 9/2 on Coordinated Cut would see a forecast dividend of around 9/1 on the 1-2 – a nice price for a fairly solid bet in my eyes.

Why am I discounting the two horses between Chabal and Coordinated Cut in the betting?

The first, Workforce, has been talked about endlessly as a class prospect but for me that’s all he is. One maiden win does not a Derby winner make, and I think it’s too risky to just go on that race and the horse’s admittedly exemplary pedigree when betting on the race.

The second, Cape Blanco, would probably have featured more in my reckoning a year ago. Two years ago I probably would have been all over him. But the O’Brien stable couldn’t win a raffle at the moment; this is the colt’s seasonal reappearance and again, I think he’s best watched in this race.

It’s far from nailed on – this is a top-quality renewal of the Dante Stakes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Derby winner was on show today – but the Chabal-Coordinated Cut forecast looks too good value to turn down.

Forecast winnings will be the same at all bookies so no need to shop around – my advice here is to open a William Hill account and take advantage of the excellent William Hill Radio service to keep abreast of the latest news from the Knavesmire.

Frankie Dettori and Godolphin can strike on board the unlucky Delegator in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood on Saturday 29th August

Delegator goes into Saturday’s Celebration Mile at Goodwood with even money odds available about him. And that must be a cracking bet on the Godolphin colt, who must qualify as the unluckiest horse of the 2009 flat racing season.

After winning the Craven Stakes impressively, Delegator was favourite to win the 2,000 Guineas in May – but came up against the undoubted superstar of the season in Sea The Stars. As we all know, John Oxx’s colt demolished the field, with Delegator, then trained by Brian Meehan, beaten by one-and-a-half lengths but still a creditable second.

The Irish 2,000 Guineas was run over heavy ground and Delegator’s performance is best forgotten. But back on good-to-firm at Royal Ascot in the St James’s Palace Stakes Delegator put up a fantastic performance to almost pip the odds-on favourite Mastercraftsman.

Since then the colt has switched to Godolphin and will be ridden by Frankie Dettori on Saturday. And in a seven-horse field there doesn’t seem to be anything that can beat him.

Sir Michael Stoute’s Zacinto is an improving course-and-distance winner but is difficult to back at best odds of 7/4. It looks a step up in class for the rest of the field, which includes two eight-year-olds.

With this in mind there seems little doubt that Delegator will go off as odds-on favourite and so the even money quoted by several firms should be snapped up while it’s available. Try Bet365, the Tote, BlueSquare, Stan James or SkyBet (with a £10 Free Matched Bet for new customers) for starters.

Betting tips for Saturday’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Abu Dhabi International at Ascot.

CONDUIT can continue an amazing run of winning favourites in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. The colt can be backed at 7/4 at most online bookmakers, but if you haven’t got a Bet365 account yet it’s well worth opening one.

Another look at Frankie Dettori’s ride of Conduit in the recent Coral-Eclipse shows just how strong a horse Conduit is. Michael Stoute’s runner would have comfortably beaten most horses in the world in that race, but for the fact that two of them were Sea The Stars – officially the best horse in the world, according to Timeform – and a tactically well-supported Rip Van Winkle.

You can watch the race again at Bet365 – look for “Bet365 Extra” and then choose “Racing Archive” in the “Results and Archive” drop-down menu. The service is free to signed-in customers. (The Eclipse, incidentally, was the 3.15 at Sandown on Saturday, 4th July.)

While there, it’s worth watching the Buckingham Palace Stakes (the 5.30 at Royal Ascot on 19th June) for the performance of Horatio Carter, a 25/1 shot in the Abu Dhabi International, also being run at Ascot this Saturday.

At the Royal meeting, Horatio Carter was hampered by a poor draw and, had he been in the stands side group, could have finished far higher than the 9th position he ended up with suggests (you’ll have to watch the race to believe me). He’s since won at Newcastle and all the International trends suggest he can win this big handicap on Saturday – he’s certainly worth a point each-way.

But Conduit should be your big bet of the day. Favourites have won the last five King Georges and Conduit can make it a sixth. We’re going in with ten points riding on her.

And remember – new customers to Bet365 can claim up to £100 in free bets and they’re also offering 1/4 the odds a place each-way on the King George. Go to the website for more details.

Selections

10 point win Conduit (7/4, Bet365) to win the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes

1 point each-way Horatio Carter (25/1, Bet365) to win the Abu Dhabi International

Frankie Dettori can land another St Leger gamble for Sir Michael Stoute at Doncaster.

CONDUIT can make a profit for each-way punters with a place in Saturday’s Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster tomorrow – and could even land a fifth win in the race for jockey Frankie Dettori.

Sir Michael Stoute’s colt is 8/1 at the Tote, Sportingbet and Paddy Power behind favourite Frozen Fire at odds of 9/4, Look Here at 4/1 and another Stoute colt Doctor Fremantle at best odds of 7/1.

Frozen Fire is rightly the favourite, given Aiden O’Brien’s form in the Group 1 races this flat racing season, but makes no appeal at those odds.

Ryan Moore, Stoute’s stable jockey, has chosen to ride Doctor Fremantle ahead of Conduit on the basis of weather forecasts that predict rain over Doncaster’s Town Moor track before the big race.

Personally I think he might have made the wrong choice. Conduit has improved all season and has wins at Ascot and Epsom behind him. Frankie Dettori is a more than able replacement for Moore and, while Doctor Fremantle cannot be ruled out, Conduit has as good a chance of landing Dettori’s fifth St Leger win.

Neither am I sure that the predictions of rain will bear fruit – and why Moore thinks Doctor Fremantle, which was Stoute’s second-string runner until the jockey made his choice, is more of a mudlark than Conduit isn’t really borne out by the formbook either.

So, while I won’t be surprised if Johnny Murtagh lands the St Leger, for me the better value each-way bet is Frankie and Sir Michael Stoute’s Conduit.

Selection

3 points each-way Conduit (8/1, general) to win the St Leger

Frankie Dettori’s mount is a good bet to win Saturday’s Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown.

CAMPANOLOGIST will be ridden by Frankie Dettori in Saturday’s Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and is great each-way odds at 9/1 to win the mile-and-a-quarter contest.

Henry Cecil’s Phoenix Tower is likely to go off favourite in the race, and rightly so after he finished in front of Pipedreamer, who races here, and a creditable four lengths behind runaway winner Duke of Marmalade in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Godolphin’s three-year-old has as good a chance as any, though – although he has yet to really prove himself at this level, though. He led from start to finish when winning the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes in June, but this is a step up and Campanologist will be facing the kind of class he was up against in the Lingfield Derby Trial earlier in the year.

He was third that day, again ridden by Frankie, and his failure to find anything extra in the last furlong of the race will have disappointed the army of punters who backed him.

But the Eclipse Stakes, fortunately, is a furlong shorter than that trip, though – and neither Alessandro Volta and King of Rome, who finished less than a length in front of Campanologist at Lingfield, will be lining up at Sandown.

Apart from the favourite, serious opposition will come from Godolphin stablemate Literato, which will need some cut in the ground, and old-stager Maraahel – which makes some appeal at a best-priced 12/1.

But Frankie’s preference for Campanologist, and the price currently being offered on this son of Kingmambo, makes him my selection.

Selection
