Paul Jones’ insight is highly valued throughout the racing world, and many punters pay handsomely to receive his Weatherbys’ betting guides.

His views on this year’s Cheltenham Festival are therefore extremely highly prized, and it’s great to see one of the big online bookmakers fork out to offer quality – and, more importantly, independent – tips and preview content to its customers completely free of charge.

Having tipped up the now-beaten Zaynar – and advised you to keep away from the now-injured Binocular – I’ve been paying particular attention to Paul’s views on the Champion Hurdle on Tuesday 16th March.

But there’s betting tips and previews available for all four day’s racing. The 2010 Cheltenham Festival is now little more than a fortnight away, so have a look at the preview site now and start planning your assault on Mr Hill’s coffers!

Our racing certainty this weekend is that Cheltenham festival favourites Punchestowns and Binocular are best watched on Saturday – for very different reasons.

My horseracing tip this weekend is that you keep your money in your pocket where two Cheltenham Festival favourites are concerned – but keep an eye on their performances ahead of the festival itself in a few weeks’ time.

It seems only yesterday that Binocular was one of the most talked-about horses around, but a disappointing performance in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle and a third place in his follow-up race at Kempton have seen the Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old eased in the Champion Hurdle ante-post betting.

J P McManus’s horse will get another run in the toteswinger Contenders Hurdle at Sandown on Saturday and is sure to be prominent in the betting. But it may be too early to forecast a renaissance in Binocular’s form and I’ll be merely watching with interest at how he performs.

Binocular is currently 8/1 at Bet365, Paddy Power, Ladbrokes and William Hill for the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham that could look good value if he comes back to form on Saturday. As they say, form is temporary but class is permanent – and let’s not forget that Binocular has undoubted class.

Punchestowns is another horse I won’t be tempted by this weekend, for a different reason. The current favourite for the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival hasn’t had a run since winning a Grade 2 at Newbury in November 2009, and he could be a bit ring-rusty.

If he fails at Sandown this Saturday the 7/2 currently being generally offered about him for the 2010 RSA Chase could be eased, and I may get interested in an ante-post flutter on him then. Again, one bad race won’t mean he’s suddenly a bad horse.

My current interest in that race is Diamond Harry, who won comfortably at Haydock the other week after finishing behind Big Buck’s in the Long Walk Hurdle in December. Sevens is available with Paddies, Laddies and Hills, and that could be worth a little tickle.

The 2010 Cheltenham Festival, racing’s best betting festival, starts in just six weeks. It’s a good time to review our Cheltenham betting tips.

The 2010 Cheltenham Festival starts in just six weeks, and with the best betting festival in UK horse racing just around the corner it’s time to take stock and review the Cheltenham Festival betting tips we brought you at Christmas.

Champion Hurdle betting

Solwhit has been cut to favourite with most bookies after winning in Leopardstown on Sunday. This doesn’t change my preference for the lightly raced Zaynar, but does make Go Native, our suggested alternative, look a good bet at the 12/1 we noted at Christmas.

Those odds have been halved since Go Native won the William Hill Christmas Hurdle at Kempton and anyone sitting on a 12/1 antepost bet for the 2010 Champion Hurdle can be well pleased.

Queen Mother Champion Chase betting

Twist Magic followed up his Tingle Creek success with a storming win in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot on Saturday. While Paul Nicholls’ Master Minded is rightly still clear favourite for this race, it’s unbelievable that some bookies are going so long on Twist Magic. Sky Bet now offer him at 8/1 while the Tote and Coral – who had him at 10s in December – are as short as fours.

I’ll be adding to my current each-way bet – 8/1 each-way is, if you prefer, a 2-1 on bet about Twist Magic finishing in the first three, which looks good value to me.

World Hurdle betting

Big Buck’s is now odds on across the board and that’s too short for me. We backed him at 5/4 and, again, if you did the same hold on to your ticket but I wouldn’t advise adding any more.

Cheltenham Gold Cup betting

As expected, Kauto Star won the King George and the manner of his winning was such that I can’t believe he’s still odds against for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. I’m wondering whether being so bullish about Denman was a mistake and so am avoiding calling this one. Call it cowardice but this is a race best watched from sitting on the fence. I can’t wait for it and don’t need to gamble any of my hard-earned to make it exciting.

Cheltenham Festival betting tips

3 points each-way Twist Magic (8/1, Sky Bet) to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase

It's a good time to take our first look at the key betting races and odds in the 2010 Cheltenham Festival.

The Cheltenham Festival seems a long way away, but we’re actually only about twelve weeks from the March betting spectacular. And so as the turn of the year approaches it seems a good time to take a look at the key races so far that could give us an indication of Cheltenham’s big betting races.

Champion Hurdle betting
The lightly raced and unbeaten Zaynar rightly heads the betting in the Champion Hurdle and <a href="href="http://www.ladbrokes.com/ast?action=go_asset&new=1&aff_id=35566&asset_id=82" target="_blank">at 5/1 looks priced about right. Its tempting to describe those next in the odds as failures; none of Binocular, Solwhit or Celestial Halo has distinguished themselves in their recent races.

The exception is Go Native, who put in a smooth staying performance when winning the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle in November. 12/1 makes him a decent each-way alternative to Zaynar.

Queen Mother Champion Chase betting
Master Minded will inevitably be well backed here, but it’s the trio of horses behind him in the betting that catch my eye. The Tingle Creek Chase set down some clear markers, with Twist Magic finishing 15 lengths in front of Forpadydeplasterer and a country mile in front of the race favourite Big Zeb.

Most of the bookies reflect this race in their odds, except Coral who bizarrely price Twist Magic at 10/1 where elsewhere he is as short as 5s. Tens is outstanding value and should be snapped up before it goes!

World Hurdle betting
Big Buck’s 5/4: that’s all I want to say on this race. While Paul Nicholls’ horse is odds against I’ll be backing him: he hasn’t put a foot wrong since unseating Sam Thomas in the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup and has won his last five races, including the 2008 World Hurdle.

Cheltenham Gold Cup betting
This race is going to be massive, with two-time winner Kauto Star up against Denman, who defeated him to win the Gold Cup in 2008. They’re 9/4 the pair at the moment, with Cooldine and Imperial Commander 12/1 and Forpadydeplasterer back at 25s.

Much in the betting will depend on Kauto Star’s performance in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, although at the moment preference has to be for Denman after the way he destroyed the opposition in this year’s Hennessy Gold Cup.

Anticipating a win for Kauto Star in the King George suggests Denman’s odds will get longer after Boxing Day so it’s worth holding out until then before betting on him to win the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

It’s worth putting a small sum on some of these now as a bit of insurance against shorter odds nearer the festival, so I’ll suggest the following now:

Selections

3 points Zaynar (5/1, <a href="href="http://www.ladbrokes.com/ast?action=go_asset&new=1&aff_id=35566&asset_id=82" target="blank">Ladbrokes) to win the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle

2 points each-way Twist Magic (10/1, Coral) to win the Cheltenham Queen Mother Champion Chase

4 points Big Buck’s (5/4, <a href="href="http://www.ladbrokes.com/ast?action=go_asset&new=1&aff_id=35566&asset_id=82" target="_blank">Ladbrokes) to win the Cheltenham World Hurdle
