York betting favourites statistics

York has a reputation for being a poor track for favourites. Do the statistics bear this out for the racecourse called “the Ascot of the North”?

Age of horses racing Non-handicap races Handicap races
2-y-o 35-108 (32.4%) 8-22 (36.4%)
3-y-o and up 40-128 (31.3%) 77-277 (27.8%)
Totals 75-236 (31.8%) 85-299 (28.5%)

What does the fate of the favourite tell us?
The most successful betting favourites at York are those racing in handicaps for two-year-olds. This is unusual, but won’t have punters turning cartwheels.

What can be said is that with some big fields and therefore big-price favourites, betting on the favourite can be more profitable at York than at other tracks.
