Fate of the Favourite
How do betting favourites get on in UK horse racing?
I’m collating the statistics and will, probably slowly, publish the results here. Which courses are good for backing favourites, and which should fav backers avoid?
It’s obviously a mammoth task so I’m starting with flat courses (with the notable exception of Cheltenham’s Prestbury Park). Hopefully by the start of the 2010 flat racing season we’ll have a full bank of favourites statistics to go to war with.

Why look at how betting favourites perform at each track?
Many betting systems revolve in some way around betting on favourites, and there’s no denying that favourites perform better at some courses and in some races than others (the favourite has a woeful track record in the Grand National, for example, but has done spankingly well in the Juddmonte International at York over the years).
Anyone interested in betting using a strategy that involves betting on favourites should also look at Adrian Massey’s hugely comprehensive statistics database.
Beware anyone charging for access to this kind of information as it’s freely available via the internet – we’re just trying to make sense of it all for you!
