You’ve got a friend in the Hennessy
By Angus | November 27, 2009
It’s the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury on Saturday, and we’re opposing former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman. Our betting tip is a horse that hits all the betting trends for this extended three-and-a-quarter mile steeplechase.
At odds of 7/1, What A Friend looks a good each-way punt for the 2009 Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. This race often falls to promising second-season chasers, and the Paul Nicholls-trained What A Friend looks exactly that on the back of some promising novice form over two miles six and further.
At seven years old he’s just the right age, and his run in the Royal Sun Alliance Chase at Cheltenham earlier this year promises big things in the Hennessy.
As for Denman, the favourite, well, he won this race in 2007 – and repeat winners of the Hennessy Gold Cup are rare.
He’s also carrying a lot of weight (unlike What A Friend, who looks very favourably handicapped) and odds of 7/2 make him a poor tip indeed.
In contrast, What A Friend looks a friend indeed, and is our Hennessy Gold Cup betting tip.
