Premier League and Championship spread betting tips

By Matt | August 4, 2009

The new football season starts in a few days, with the 2009/10 Championship season starting this weekend and the Premier League kicking off a week later.

It’s a great time to check out the points spreads at spread betting firm Sporting Index, so we’ve taken a look on your behalf. Here’s our guide on who to buy and who to sell in the new football season spreads.

  1. Buy Man City at 67.5 points
Despite the spending spree at Manchester City the spread bookies remain convinced that City will fail to break into the big four. Arsenal have a spread of 73-74.5 and it is just bizarre that City are put at 66-67.5. They’ve invested in some great strikers, have the nucleus of a great defence in Toure and Lescott and can now beat anyone in the league. They’re a clear buy.
  2. Buy Portsmouth at 40 points
Pompey haven’t looked too clever in the transfer market so far, losing Peter Crouch and strengthening their defence with Steve Finnan, who was a mainstay of Fantasy Football teams up and down the land about a decade ago. This has pushed their forecast spread down to 38.5-40 points which – given the huge amounts of Arab cash potentially at their disposal – can be smashed. There’s little risk they’ll finish with a lot less than 40 points and so although I don’t expect to win a fortune this is a decent buy.
  3. Sell Newcastle at 69 points
This is possibly the no-brainer of the season. The Mags are in disarray: nobody wants to buy them, nobody wants to play for them and nobody wants to manage them. They’ll need a serious turnaround to get 69 points but this has all the hallmarks of a Leeds United-like slide through the divisions. Sell at 69, but get ready to take a profit if someone with a brain looks like taking them over – this is still a big club, after all.
  4. Buy Nottingham Forest at 66 points
Forest have been on something of a spending spree in the close season, strengthening their squad in all areas. Former Preston captain Paul McKenna looks an excellent buy and manager Billy Davies has form in turning relegation candidates into promotion hopefuls. Another buy.

There’s bargains to be had in the lower leagues, with an unusually strong League One featuring a host of ex-Premiership sides in Leeds United, Charlton Athletic, Southampton and Norwich City.

Norwich look the most tempting buy at 74-76 points, being more stable than the favourites at Elland Road, while Sven’s Notts County should be strongly considered as a sell in League Two – their performance last year and the bizarre appointment of the ex-England lothario in now way justifies a spread of 77-79 points.
