Glorious Goodwood betting tip #1: the Sussex Stakes

By Angus | July 28, 2009

A cracking renewal of the Sussex Stakes looks to be one of the highlights of Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday, and second-favourite Ghanaati looks a good bet to beat the colts and land the prize for Barry Hills.

It pays to back three-year-olds in this race, with older horses given a punishing weight penalty that will work against the likes of Paco Boy. Likewise, Rip Van Winkle – who will go off favourite after his second to Sea The Stars at the Coral Eclipse and, with Aidan O’Brien running three horses in the field, will get the benefit of a tactically run race – will carry three pounds more than Ghanaati and her fellow filly Lahaleeb.

At a best price of 13/1 Rip Van Winkle should be opposed, especially after rumours about a sore hoof. These seem to surface before every single one of Rip Van Winkle’s big races and have to raise questions around the colt’s overall fitness.

Ghanaati on the other hand hasn’t put a foot wrong all season and the 1,000 Guineas winner can be backed at odds of 9/4 at BlueSquare and Bet365, which look pretty generous all told. We’ll have four points on her as our Sussex Stakes betting tip – our first tip of this year’s Glorious Goodwood.
