Top Premier League goalscorer? Get Bent!
By Matt | August 11, 2008
Darren Bent, Tottenham Hotspur’s on-fire striker, looks a great each-way bet to finish as the top Premier League goalscorer for the 2008/09 season.
With 12 goals in pre-season friendlies, it is unbelievable that Bent is still a huge 33/1 with Skybet and he is simply begging to be backed each-way to win the Premier League golden boot.
Robbie Keane’s absence has been brushed aside by Spurs, who have strengthened their squad phenomenally.
UEFA Cup-winning coach Juande Ramos has brought in Croatia midfielder cum striker Luka Modric and England winger David Bentley and looks like he will add playmaker Andrei Arshavin.
But the biggest reason for optimism at White Hart Lane is the continued presence of Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian is the one player Alex Ferguson wanted to add to his Man United squad but, perhaps distracted by the Cristiano Ronaldo saga, hasn’t yet tempted Berbatov away from Spurs.
Or perhaps Berbatov realises that something special is happening at the lane. And if he does stay at Spurs, which looks increasingly likely, he will benefit from a far better level of service than he got last year.
More pertinently, Berbatov is a great provider of goals and his off-the-ball running alone shows him to be one of the most intelligent footballers in the world – like Teddy Sheringham, but with pace.
Like Sheringham, Berbatov’s game around the 18-yard box will benefit whoever his strike partner is. Darren Bent can only benefit and the 33/1 has to be snapped up before the odds shorten.
William Hill have already cut him to 25s after one punter bet a grand each-way on him at 40/1. I wouldn’t suggest punters steam in at that level, but Bent definitely looks worth an interest.

The only problem I see with Bent is his ability to pick up an injury and miss 10 games in a season? Mind you at 33/1 its a pretty good outside chance.
