New Approach to reverse Newmarket placings
By Matt | May 23, 2008
New Approach can reverse his Newmarket loss by winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh tomorrow, say the punters. I agree with them, and have backed the favourite to win the mile contest at 11/8.
Henrythenavigator beat the son of Galileo - the only loss of his career so far - in the English running of the colts’ classic, but New Approach could have held on, and the pair’s return to Ireland will go against Aiden O’Brien’s runner.
New Approach beat Henrythenavigator by more than three lengths at the Curragh back in August – the latter being ridden by Kieran Fallon in that seven-furlong contest - and the horse has yet to win at the course.
New Ballydoyle stable jockey Johnny Murtagh will get the ride tomorrow and is a safe pair of hands, but I fancy he’ll be able to do little against New Approach’s pace.
It could be a Guineas double for trainer Jim Bolger, who saddles up Nahoodh and Saoirse Abu in the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday. The pair are vying for favouritism in the fillies’ contest.
